A Flower That Blooms in Adversity: Challenging Children with Special Needs

Recently, I posted a quote on my personal Facebook page.   This is our special duty, that if anyone specially needs our help, we should give him such help to the utmost of our power. Marcus Tullius Cicero   I was “in my feelings” about some things that were going on in my life involving my special needs child. My son has severe ADHD, and is two standard deviations behind other students his age. He has a little bit of undiagnosed impulse control as well which I believe comes from his ADHD. I noticed that he was bringing home extremely easy to read books, and his newsletter from the teacher stated that they were learning how to add numbers to make 5 and 10.  The newsletter also included their life skills curriculum. One of the items on the docket were how to wash their hands and do the dishes. Now, I am well aware that my child is academically behind other children. This is why he is in a special needs classroom to begin with. With that being said, My son has known how to add numbers since the end of two school years ago, and he is reading chapter...

Friends that Transcend Space and Time

Life is short, volatile,  and unpredictable.  Sometimes it goes to heights unimaginable.  Other times, it crashes into the darkest depths. Then, when we least expect it, it just disappears. No one can prepare for that moment truly. Even with signs and warnings, you think, maybe just one more day? Today, we will be saying farewell to a dear friend of mine. After fighting the hard fight, and winning many battles,  the war with cancer is claiming another beautiful light in this world. Personally,  this warrior is one of the main reasons I continued to write my articles sitting himself as my number one friend. I’d write my funny stories just to keep him distracted while in the hospital, or bring up a controversial subject just to keep his mind focused. I remember meeting him for the first time as a new blogger. He offered all the best advice, and became my very first follower. We hit it off, and became instant friends with a feeling that we’ve known each other forever. After he got me hooked, he introduced me to his blog. It was there that I discovered that he was fighting the enemy within. I have to be honest,...

Then and Now: A Love/Hate Relationship between Brothers

I don’t like my brother. That’s the simple truth of how I feel right now. We are six years apart, and live two completely different lifestyles. As a matter of fact, I do everything I can to avoid spending too much time with him. I’m just being brutally honest and transparent. That’s not how it always was however. Back in our younger days, my brother and I used to go on walks together just to talk. We used to cry with each other. We used to be together every day. Yeah, he was always the most annoying thing this side of Annoying Orange or Fred the Movie. For example, we were bunk bed children. Unlike other bunkbed children, my brother didn’t want the top bunk. He instead wanted to lay under my bed so that he could kick me for hours on end. Yeah, that kind of annoying. However, as life moved along, something changed. Maybe it was him. Maybe it was me. Whatever it was, it caused a deep rift. It’s possible that I’m too prideful and holier than thou. I do admit that I have an issue with pride. My wife even tells me I’m borderline arrogant. It...

Fat Man Vs. Scale: Who Will Arise the Victor? – My 300lb Life

I had an extremely discouraging week this week. It ended on a good note, but there for about four days I felt like just throwing in the towel. You see, the scale decided to challenge me. It thought it would play a dirty little joke to get my blood boiling. Four days in a row, no matter how hard I worked and how much I watched my food intake, it read 326lbs. I got the better of it though. Today, I weighed in at 317.2lbs! Take that! In your face you little faced piece of bouncy floor!…… I better not get too excited. It might decide to be mean to me again next week. I’m a firm advocate for weighing yourself daily. I know many people don’t like that idea, but once you get the groove of how your body works, it is actually beneficial and a little encouraging. I understand that the human body has weight fluctuations. There are things like water retention, full bowels, and clothing changes that factor into it. Occasionally the scale will say you gained 5lbs only to drop it by 10 at the end of the week. It happens. But weighing yourself daily...

Wife Watch – Winter Edition

Every year it happens at least once. If you know my wife, you know she is absolutely prone to acts of misforntune. I don’t know why. It’s just the way of the world. Have you ever read the Series of Unfortunate Events? Yeah, she’s the 4th, unnamed Boudelaire child. I have come to accept a theory. The reason she is the recipient of so many mishaps and mayhem is as a scapegoat for the rest of us. We live luckier lives thanks to her sacrifice. What is it that happens at least once a year you might ask? When Winter reaches its nastiest peak, she finds that one spot of ice that we all missed, and face plants. Now… I’m not saying it’s funny or anything, but… who am I kidding? I laugh so hard, I nearly lose my own balance. Let me give you a short example. Our very first winter together was a really nasty one. I had yet to discover my wife was a misfortune magnet. We left our vehicle to go inside. My legs are longer than hers, so I am used to arriving to my destination a couple moments earlier. I sat down in my...

Is That You, Mr. Claus? – Selah in Heaven

Christmas is coming soon! From the time this is being written, we have 10 days left. I wonder if St Nicholas knew that his work here on earth would lead to the formation of our modern day Santa Claus. I’m thankful for all the great things he did, but I am even more thankful for the spark of imagination he has struck in the minds of children everywhere. Selah may not get to celebrate with us; however, she can meet the man who started it all for herself. Speaking of Christmas, ***Affiliate Links to Follow*** I was given a great opportunity by a pretty cool affiliate to help increase the imagination of my children. There’s this program called Package from Santa. They have the works. Your child is given a customized letter, phone call, and video message from Santa himself as well as autographed images. I could review this completely for you, but I have a better idea. I’ll show you what it made happen. My youngest daughter has been having issues with her attitude lately. There was an option on the personalized letter to choose that your child has been naughty. This video is the result. My little girl...

Selah in Heaven – Gone Fishing

Sometimes, we just need to stop and appreciate the little things in life. Get excited about anything. Life is worth so much more than just dragging through it. While my daughter was still here on earth, she was in immense pain. We didn’t know it at the time because she was good at hiding it. Our 6 month old little girl smiled more than anyone in our home. The only thing she wanted in return was to see you smile as well. As a matter of fact, she demanded it. You would hear a random angry scream. Then another one. My word, what’s wrong with Selah? But once you looked at her, a huge smile spread across her face. You smiled back. You had no choice in the matter. I challenge you this week, stop and smell the roses as they say. This is the month dedicated to be thankful. find something small every day to be thankful for. Not just the obvious things, but the things you take for granted. Forks for example. I’m a weird kind of guy, but I am absolutely thankful for forks. Aren’t you? I’m taking this challenge myself. It’s difficult to do, especially on...
