Fat Man Vs. Scale: Who Will Arise the Victor? – My 300lb Life

I had an extremely discouraging week this week. It ended on a good note, but there for about four days I felt like just throwing in the towel. You see, the scale decided to challenge me. It thought it would play a dirty little joke to get my blood boiling. Four days in a row, no matter how hard I worked and how much I watched my food intake, it read 326lbs. I got the better of it though. Today, I weighed in at 317.2lbs! Take that! In your face you little faced piece of bouncy floor!…… I better not get too excited. It might decide to be mean to me again next week. I’m a firm advocate for weighing yourself daily. I know many people don’t like that idea, but once you get the groove of how your body works, it is actually beneficial and a little encouraging. I understand that the human body has weight fluctuations. There are things like water retention, full bowels, and clothing changes that factor into it. Occasionally the scale will say you gained 5lbs only to drop it by 10 at the end of the week. It happens. But weighing yourself daily...

Wife Watch – Winter Edition

Every year it happens at least once. If you know my wife, you know she is absolutely prone to acts of misforntune. I don’t know why. It’s just the way of the world. Have you ever read the Series of Unfortunate Events? Yeah, she’s the 4th, unnamed Boudelaire child. I have come to accept a theory. The reason she is the recipient of so many mishaps and mayhem is as a scapegoat for the rest of us. We live luckier lives thanks to her sacrifice. What is it that happens at least once a year you might ask? When Winter reaches its nastiest peak, she finds that one spot of ice that we all missed, and face plants. Now… I’m not saying it’s funny or anything, but… who am I kidding? I laugh so hard, I nearly lose my own balance. Let me give you a short example. Our very first winter together was a really nasty one. I had yet to discover my wife was a misfortune magnet. We left our vehicle to go inside. My legs are longer than hers, so I am used to arriving to my destination a couple moments earlier. I sat down in my...

Is That You, Mr. Claus? – Selah in Heaven

Christmas is coming soon! From the time this is being written, we have 10 days left. I wonder if St Nicholas knew that his work here on earth would lead to the formation of our modern day Santa Claus. I’m thankful for all the great things he did, but I am even more thankful for the spark of imagination he has struck in the minds of children everywhere. Selah may not get to celebrate with us; however, she can meet the man who started it all for herself. Speaking of Christmas, ***Affiliate Links to Follow*** I was given a great opportunity by a pretty cool affiliate to help increase the imagination of my children. There’s this program called Package from Santa. They have the works. Your child is given a customized letter, phone call, and video message from Santa himself as well as autographed images. I could review this completely for you, but I have a better idea. I’ll show you what it made happen. My youngest daughter has been having issues with her attitude lately. There was an option on the personalized letter to choose that your child has been naughty. This video is the result. My little girl...

Selah in Heaven – Gone Fishing

Sometimes, we just need to stop and appreciate the little things in life. Get excited about anything. Life is worth so much more than just dragging through it. While my daughter was still here on earth, she was in immense pain. We didn’t know it at the time because she was good at hiding it. Our 6 month old little girl smiled more than anyone in our home. The only thing she wanted in return was to see you smile as well. As a matter of fact, she demanded it. You would hear a random angry scream. Then another one. My word, what’s wrong with Selah? But once you looked at her, a huge smile spread across her face. You smiled back. You had no choice in the matter. I challenge you this week, stop and smell the roses as they say. This is the month dedicated to be thankful. find something small every day to be thankful for. Not just the obvious things, but the things you take for granted. Forks for example. I’m a weird kind of guy, but I am absolutely thankful for forks. Aren’t you? I’m taking this challenge myself. It’s difficult to do, especially on...

A Town of History and Mystery – 300 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 5

Give your city a new name that reflects what type of place it is. I live in a place that has been written off as a den for drug dealers and uneducated hicks mixed together in a weird way that makes it more of a junkyard than a working environment. I have seen videos, read articles, and seen images on social media all portraying us in a horrible light. I’ve lived here my entire life. I’m rooted in. As a child, I only knew of this city as boring. There’s never anything to do. We don’t have cool malls. There’s no arcade. The best place for young people to hang out is the local Walmart. But my view has changed as I’ve grown older. I live in a place rich with history. A place of firsts. At first, I thought only the great Samuel Clemens came from here (Mark Twain). There’s so much more to it than that. We have the inventor of the Leer Jet Engine. We have Molly Brown, Admiral Coontz, Mary Myrum (The very first woman to vote), continuing on to painters, sports players, activists, poets, and music stars. All you have to do is give a...

Dear Past Self – A Message from the Future – 300 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 4

Write a diary entry dated 10 years into the future.   November 2nd 2027       Dear Diary, For the life of me, I can’t figure out why I’m a grown man, going gray, sitting here writing in my daughter’s pink diary she left behind. I guess I’m just sort of sad that all my children grew up on me. They all have their own lives. My oldest is even getting married next spring. Glad he waited until after college. I’m proud of the responsible man he has become as compared to the reckless youth he was before. Sure, he may not have stayed in to become a doctor, but an Bachelor’s degree is more than I had. My oldest daughter is in college right now. She chose to go to an out of town one though. Something about wanting to explore the world. I still have my youngest two at home. Hormones are running wild with them being teenagers. They are well mannered compared to what I’ve seen out of others, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t crazy to me compared to the sweet smiles I was used to. Soon, they will leave the roost too. That’ll leave...

My Therapy – 300 Days of Writing Prompts – Day 3

What is your favorite work of art? What do you love about it? Ever since my daughter passed away, my wife and I began to tell stories to each other about what we think she would have been like here on Earth. We would wonder what she was doing in Heaven; the people she’d meet, the places she’d go, and the wonders she would see. Her adventures, in our version, would always end in some sort of disaster. I mean, even though we only had her for 6 months, we could already tell what kind of personality she was beginning to develop. My favorite expression of art would have to be my Selah in Heaven comics that I have drawn for this page in the past, and am still drawing in my sketch book. I am aware that my sketches aren’t the most detailed. They won’t win any awards. They won’t even be hung on any walls. But they are deeply precious to me. The Selah in Heaven comic is drawn for selfish reasons. It’s therapeutic. It helps me cope with my daughter’s passing while at the same time realize that she still exists. Knowing that she is terrorizing Heaven...
